Underwater

This series is based on the theme of 'Underwater'. Each piece explores a different aspect of a woman's emotions and the feelings they become free of or escape from while in this underwater world. There's a weightlessness that is physically achieved and allows for the emotions to not hang so heavy on us.

This Woman's Work

This piece is about the daily mental load we become entangled with. The fabric represents the mass of otherwise heavy load that takes over our lives and we carry around with us. The invisible labour is exposed here, shown floating and entwined with her hair and around her limbs. Once underwater we are free from what ties us down.

Oh, There is Thunder In our Hearts

This title of this piece is taken from a line in 'Running Up That Hill' by Kate Bush. The symbolism of this song centres around the imbalance of power, gender and struggle. The desire to swap places to understand the struggles. The figure The figure floats gracefully, peering towards the surface where she must reach, to achieve the unattainable.

Bend And Break

Both anguish and ecstasy is displayed here in the contorted position of the figure, her head bent back as she moved in the water. Torn between the paradox of joy and pain of motherhood, partnership and being ourselves.

Submerged, I Will Rise

A woman falls, adorned with rich fabric and jewellery hanging from her neck, a face applied carefully with makeup. Colourful distractions, a mask, fake in its appearance. The way we are expected to and feel we must present ourselves to the world.
